Secretaries Update, 25th July 2020

Dear members,

The latest set of guidance changes have made little practical impact on how we shoot at Headley Park. The most notable change is that concerning the use of indoor ranges. For us this means that you are now able to use the 25m and 50m firing points rather than moving forward out of the firing sheds, so at least you will be able to stay out of the rain at last. This is the principle change to our range usage and it came into force today 25th July 2020. The Eventbrite system remains in place and you must continue to book all general shooting attendances at the club.

100yds range: Targets seem to be being set up at the incorrect target heights at both the 50m and the 50yd target positions. If you are shooting from a bench particular care must be taken with the height of the target you are shooting. Your bullets must hit the sand buttstop after passing through your target they must not strike the range floor or the protective sleepers. Following the extensive work on this range timbers have been reinstated and you might find that a target position that used to clear the old woodwork will not now clear the new. Please check carefully remembering that your bullet will continue to drop after passing through a 50yd/m target or better still go to the 50m range where this problem simply cannot occur.

The removal of part of the back of the 100yd range to meet with the outside regulations also revealed some serious rot in the wooden timber sole plates and this has been a blessing in disguise as we can now make good and ensure a better and safer range building. The end of the 25m range has suffered in a similar way and again is having a new sole plate and bottom timber supports fitted. Please don't forget to limit yourself to just .22 (standard velocity if possible please) on the 100yds range for the time being for the benefit of our neighbours as without the rear of the building sound will travel straight back towards the road. As soon as the back wall has been reinstated we will return to normal calibre usage this is only a temporary change.

After further consultation with discipline captains there are a few of the action disciplines that would like to try to get back to their monthly shoots in a covid compliant way. So this signals the move into Phase two of our Covid planning. The current club covid rules allow no more than 6 persons to be present on any of our individual ranges including range officers so the shoot captains have been undertaking an individual discipline based risk assessment to work out their new shoot procedures. They will then arrange for test shoots to see if there are any unanticipated problems before getting back into the normal shooting calendar. The shoot captains will be block booking the ranges that they will be using so the shooters will not need to book via Eventbrite for these shoots rather they will have to book via the relevant shoot captain who will be responsible for controling the numbers and social distancing on the range. Shoot captains will be contacting their regular attendees directly to let them know what is happening. Modern 3 Gun, Western and Practical and AR and Historic Gallery and midweek Rummy are the disciplines concerned. Although the Pit remains closed for general club shooting it will be used for some of these formal shoots.

The necessity of booking a range will continue and the Eventbrite system allows us to fulfil our Track and Trace obligations. If you need to be at the club for any other reason, e.g. range or equipment maintenance etc. please drop me a line letting me know so that we comply with the Government guidance.

Stay safe and shoot straight,

Rod
